The Power of Video Content for Nonprofits
In today’s fast-paced digital world, video content has become a critical tool for nonprofits looking to make a real impact. At Ivan Anhe Productions, we understand the unique challenges nonprofits face in raising awareness, attracting funding, and engaging with their communities. With years of experience working specifically with nonprofit organizations, we’ve seen firsthand how powerful video can be in transforming the way these organizations communicate their mission and connect with their supporters.
Video allows nonprofits to tell their stories in dynamic, emotionally resonant ways that go beyond traditional communication methods. Through visuals, sound, and storytelling, video creates a deeper connection with audiences, helping them understand not only the work being done but also the human element behind it. Whether it’s a heartwarming story about the people your organization serves, or a powerful showcase of the work you do in the community, video is an excellent medium for demonstrating the true impact of your programs.
At Ivan Anhe Productions, we specialize in working with nonprofits to create video content that achieves specific goals. Our experience has shown us that nonprofit organizations often need more than just a promotional video—they need a tool that can help them fundraise, recruit volunteers, and engage with the community. That’s where our expertise comes in. We work closely with nonprofits to understand their needs and craft videos that not only showcase their work but also resonate with potential donors, volunteers, and supporters. From telling the stories of individuals whose lives have been changed by your organization, to presenting compelling calls to action, we know how to make your video content work harder for you.
One of the most powerful aspects of video is its ability to frame the impact of your work in ways that might not be possible through other channels. For nonprofits, impact isn’t just about numbers—it's about stories. It’s about the faces behind the programs, the people whose lives are improved, and the powerful change that occurs. Through thoughtful storytelling, we help nonprofits like yours bring these elements to life in ways that touch hearts and inspire action. Whether you’re looking to raise awareness for a new initiative, recruit participants for a program, or showcase your success to potential funders or at large events, we bring the creativity, technical skill, and nonprofit experience needed to make your vision a reality.
We know that nonprofits often work with limited budgets, and that’s why we take an efficient and cost-effective approach to video production. Our deep understanding of nonprofit operations allows us to deliver high-quality content that meets your needs while staying within your budget. From the initial concept to the final edit, we’re here to ensure that every aspect of your video serves a purpose in advancing your mission.
At Ivan Anhe Productions, our goal is not only to produce great videos, but to help nonprofits discover new ways to communicate their impact. We’re passionate about using the power of storytelling to elevate the work of organizations that are making a difference in the world. By working with us, you’ll have a trusted partner who is not just a video producer, but a creative collaborator who can help you reframe your mission and amplify your message in ways that truly connect with your audience.
Video is a tool that can move people to action. Whether you’re trying to raise funds, recruit volunteers, or simply spread the word about the incredible work your organization is doing, the right video can make all the difference. At Ivan Anhe Productions, we’re here to help you harness the power of video to support your mission and take your nonprofit to the next level. Let’s tell your story together.
How to shoot a Narrative Film
Shooting a narrative film is an exhilarating process that blends creativity, meticulous planning, and collaboration. Each step, from the initial concept to the final cut, requires careful consideration and execution. In May, we decided to shoot a documentary-style video about a musician. Every year, my company and I fund a special project in the DMV area (Washington, D.C. metro area).
Step 1: The Initial Concept
The journey begins with an idea. In our case, we wanted to spotlight a musician's journey. This idea was inspired by our annual tradition of self-funding a unique project about an artist in the DMV area.
Step 2: Choosing the Right Talent
Selecting the right subject is crucial. We chose Jon Worthy, a talented singer-songwriter we had previously worked with. His compelling story and charismatic personality made him the perfect fit for our documentary.
Step 3: Pre-Production Planning
Effective pre-production planning sets the stage for a successful shoot. This includes:
Discussion with the Talent: Understanding Jon's story, his music, and his vision for the documentary.
Script Development: Crafting a narrative script that encapsulates Jon's journey.
Visual Line Creation: Gathering reference images and defining the visual style to ensure the documentary's look aligns with the story.
Technical Script: Outlining scenes and camera movements to guide the filming process.
Color Harmony: Selecting props and settings that complement the chosen color palette.
Step 4: The Shoot
Filming took place over an intense but rewarding 8-hour session. The preparation, which spanned around 10 hours, paid off as we were able to capture the essence of Jon's artistry efficiently and effectively.
Step 5: Post-Production
Post-production is where the magic happens. Editing the footage, adding music, and refining the narrative to create a cohesive and engaging final product.
By following these steps, we ensure that every narrative film we produce not only tells a compelling story but also captivates and resonates with our audience. The attention to detail in planning, the harmony of visual and narrative elements, and the dedication to the craft make each project a unique and rewarding experience.

The tool that will change the way you expose your video
As an image maker, it’s crucial to have control over light in a scene. That's how we create create depth and give volume to an image. We have different tools built into the camera and external monitors that help us to expose the image, such as zebras, histograms, or false colors.
Those tools are great as a guide, but what if you could be more specific? What if, somehow, you could convert your camera into a light meter, giving you the ability to precisely know the stops of light and contrast that your frame has? Well, it’s here, and that tool is called the EL Zone System, developed by cinematographer Ed Lachman. To me, crafting an image that captivates, engages, and inspires emotions in your viewers is everything, and when I understood the power of this tool, it blew my mind.
This system works with the reference point of 18% gray. The EL Zone System takes 18% gray as a reference, and each incremental value of light, whether brighter or darker, is measured by stops. It’s easy to get confused with false colors, but remember, this system measures stops, while false colors measure radio signals that started with the Lumière brothers back in 1895.
I started using this tool a month ago in all our projects here in the Washington, D.C. metro area (DMV), and it has already improved my workflow. I’ve also been able to more accurately achieve the intended look, without using a light meter.
At the moment, you can find this tool in external monitors like SmallHD and the new monitors from Atomos and Sigma cameras.
If you test this tool, let me know what you think.
The importance of light in Filmmaking
As a cinematographer and video production company owner in the Washington D.C. metro area (DMV), I have recently seen more and more people become interested in filmmaking. A significant part of this interest is due to the increased accessibility of camera gear. However, along with this accessibility, a common misconception has arisen: many aspiring filmmakers believe that to improve their craft, they need to invest in more expensive camera equipment. While gear does matter to some extent, there are fundamental aspects of filmmaking that hold even greater importance, and one of these is understanding light.
In filmmaking, light is vital. It begins with the simple fact that our equipment needs light to capture images. Lighting can profoundly impact the way stories are told, influencing scenes and interviews to evoke different emotions. For instance, in "The Godfather," the cinematographer strategically lit the main character from overhead, casting pronounced shadows under his eyes, thereby creating a sense of intrigue for the viewers.
So, in essence, while camera gear certainly plays a role in filmmaking, it's essential to recognize that understanding and manipulating light is equally, if not more, critical to achieving cinematic excellence.
During the recent years, I have been investing more time and resources to understand lighting and how it affects the quality of my work. I have used different types of lights for various tasks, including LED lights, panel lights, tube lights, flexible lights, natural light, and tungsten lights. I have also utilized various light modifiers to change the quality of light, creating a rich contrast between hard and soft light, and high or low contrast between light and shadows. All of this has helped me to create a rich image, whether I'm filming an interview, a music video, or a narrative film.
Studying light as a cinematographer is an ongoing journey, and I constantly strive to experiment with new techniques to enhance the storytelling aspect of my work. I believe that a compelling story must be complemented by effective lighting that aligns with the narrative's ultimate goal.
The Filmmaking Industry in Washington DC
While Washington DC is not necessarily known as a hub in the cinema industry, it has a growing community of filmmakers, producers, and creative minds. In fact, some of the biggest blockbusters have been filmed in the DC area, including Wonder Woman 1984, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, National Treasure, and The Exorcist.
One of the reasons for which DC has become a popular place for filmmakers is the diversity of the landscapes and architecture that the city offers. From the historic buildings and monuments to the more modern and elegant architecture, there exists an ample variety of unique locations for filmmakers to set their stories in.
Another benefit of working in the DC area is the proximity to national organizations and governmental institutions. This allows filmmakers to have access to resources, contacts, and information that may not be available in other cities. For example, filmmakers in DC can obtain permits to film in various historic sites and parks, which opens a world of possibilities in terms of storylines and creative exploration.
In general, the filmmaking industry in Washington DC is a vibrant community and an exciting one to be part of. It may not have the same recognition as other important filmmaking hubs, but that also means that there is space for growth and innovation. As someone who has worked in the industry here for some time, I’m constantly inspired by the creativity of the people around me and thrilled to contribute to the growth of our industry here in DC.

How to Build Your Brand Using Video Content
Throughout my time working in the field of video production, I have watched video content go from being an optional, innovative marketing tool, to one that is essential in marketing. Why? Consumers in today’s world crave this type of content from the brands and businesses they follow.
Video content has become one of the most influential ways of communicating with the public. Enormous numbers of internet users consume video ads, and from that total, at least half become more likely to purchase a product or utilize a service after viewing the video than before watching it. It has therefore become critical for marketers to continue to feed this kind of content to their public.
Over the past decade, video has increased in both popularity and value. Part of this is thanks to YouTube, which has become the second largest search engine in the world. Due to the increase in demand for video content by consumers, companies of all kinds and sizes are turning to video as their marketing strategy, seeking more effective ways to connect to their audience. Most of this content is developed specifically for social media, the platform which has given brands the most effective way to reach a wide audience.
To this end, it is important for a business to learn to send their message strategically, creatively, and clearly. The goal, of course, is not making a viral video, but turning your prospective clients into buyers. When developing a video, you should ask yourself who your audience is, what tone the video will take (informative, announcement, descriptive, emotive, inspirational), and the duration. People’s attention span has become increasingly short, for which reason the first three seconds of any video should be the “hook” that draws the audience in and entices them to keep watching and learning more.
Marketing methods have changed mediums throughout history and will certainly continue to do so in the future, but a successful brand will keep up with the times by creating innovative content that their clients and prospective clients are looking for. And in 2022, that happens to be video.
If you are looking to develop your brand through dynamic, quality, and creative video content, don’t hesitate to give us a call to see how we can help you create and share your message with a wider audience.
Why Invest in Video Content During a Pandemic?
We are living in a challenging time - one that neither we, nor our businesses, have seen before.
It’s impacted our economy drastically, our jobs, our goals, and our families. I can think of few industries that haven’t felt the negative impact of COVID-19.
While many businesses and individuals are operating in survival mode and may struggle to find a reason or funds to invest in something like quality marketing content at a time like this, we believe it is even more important than ever before. While our audiences spend more time online at home, we have a prime opportunity to show them exactly why we deserve their time, investment, and attention. While we are far apart in distance, we still have an opportunity to connect with our clients, and those connections have become often critical to our business’ success. Video content is an art form that has the power to bring your message directly to your clients in a multitude of manners; to remind them why what you do matters, or why they matter to you. A message has the ability to express your values and mission, to evoke emotion, and to inspire action. Whether you are a small business trying to build your audience or a large company who wishes to pull your name back to the forefront in the midst of an ocean of companies doing the same, a single video, well-developed and well-placed, has the power to reconnect YOU with your clients.
No matter who you are, now is a prime time to send a message - of hope, of solidarity, of how you continue to serve them. At a time like this, video content is connection - and connection is critical while we’re farther apart than we’re used to.
No matter what you or your business is feeling, we understand. And we believe that video content should not be seen as a burden to the budget, but as the strategy that you should look to next to rebuild, stand out, and reconnect during these tough times.
Have a message you’re ready to send? Let us know how we can help.
What is “cinematic storytelling?”
We believe that each story deserves a red-carpet debut!
Of course, we know that videos have a variety of purposes – anything from a music video to a corporate commercial. But that doesn’t mean that each one can’t have the cinematic elements we all love. When we say, “cinematic storytelling,” we aim to combine technical skills used in quality cinema with storytelling structures that ensure engagement and impact. We strive to break away from the cookie cutter commercials, stiff interviews, or bland b-roll, and replace that with strong visuals that set your video apart from the rest and capture attention.
Today’s audience is becoming more and more inundated with video content, giving one reason that strong video content, and UNIQUE video content, is becoming more important. No matter what your message is, we believe it’s important; and that’s why we want to help you bring it to life in the best way we know how.
No story is the same, so let us take a new innovative approach to your vision. Let us serve as your guide in developing your idea. We believe it’s big-screen worthy.
Still unsure what we mean? Check out our reel to take a look.
